Event: lecture by the Professor Tim Foresman, Queensland University of Technology “How Science and Technology can lead to prosperity and sustainability” Place: Embassy of Croatia Date: 3rd March 2015 On Tuesday 3rd March, the Embassy of Croatia and the Queensland University of Technology organized a science and technology network-building event with a lecture „How Science and Technology can lead to prosperity and sustainability“ given by Professor Tim Foresman, SIBA Chair in Spatial Information at the Institute for Future Environments, at Queensland University of Technology. The event has brought together the leadership of Geoscience Australia (Dr Clinton Foster, Chief Scientist and Mr Anthony Stinziani, CIO), Executive Director of the Australian Research Council Professor Brian Yates, representatives of the Australian administration relevant to the area of Science and Technology, the ambassadors and senior diplomats from more than 20 countries, and scholars and professors from the Australian universities. In his introductory remarks Ambassador Dr Damir Kusen said that science and technology should contribute more to industry with the power of innovation. By utilizing the new technologies and new advanced materials, industry could be more competitive and products could be of higher quality. He emphasized the importance of the international cooperation and collaboration in the areas of innovation, research in science and technology. He mentioned that the European Union recognized this potential and the budget of 70 billion euros is allocated to the Science and Technology Framework programme Horizon 2020. More than then 5 billion euros are reserved for the new research of graphene and its new and innovative industrial applications. These numbers suggest that Europe is an attractive place for international S&T cooperation. He said that Croatia is a new European Union country but very active in this area. Ambassador Kusen emphasized that 5 members of the Australian Academy of Science are of the Croatian origin, what gives an additional impetus for deeper science and research cooperation. Dr Foresman explained the global applications of digital spatial technology in comprehensive approach of information gathering, geosciences research, climate change studies, and prediction of natural disasters through the sophisticated early warning system. He presented the incoming “Pivotal 2015 International Executive Summit”, to be held in Brisbane on 29-20 June 2015, and will be attended by the world’ premier science, government, and business leaders from around the world.
