Non-commercial movement of pets
Not more than five pets accompanied by their owner or another responsible person authorized by the owner, and which are not intended for sale or delivery to another owner, may be imported in Croatia under specific conditions.
As used herein, pets include: dog, cats, animals from the marten family, invertebrates (with the exception of bees and crustaceans), ornamental tropical fish, amphibians, reptiles, all types of birds (besides fowl imported for commercial purposes, for zoos and zoo shops), mammals: rodents and rabbits.
Dogs, cats, animals from the marten family (Mustelidae) and African polecats (Mustela putorius), which are from the area of the EU Member States, shall:
Also, import and movement of animal species under three months of age which have not been vaccinated shall also be permitted provided that such animals have a passport, and that they have lived from birth at the same place and have not been in contact with wild animals which may have been exposed to infection or move with their mother on whom they are still dependent. If these pets are imported in the area of the Republic of Croatia for permanent stay, and have not been microchipped, they shall be microchipped within 15 days from the date of entering the country.
If dogs, cats, animals from the marten family (Mustelidae) and African polecats (Mustela putorius) have been microchipped using a microchip which is not in conformity with the criteria specified in Croatian regulations, i.e. EU regulations, their keeper shall ensure an adequate microchip reader for the purpose of reading the microchip identification number.
Potentially dangerous bull type terrier dogs which are not entered in the register of the International Kennel Federation (FCI) (pit bull terrier) and their cross breeds may not be imported or stay permanently in the area of the Republic of Croatia.
Dogs which are, because of their innate characteristics and aggressive instincts or training, dangerous for the safety of people, especially dobermanns, American Stafordshire Terriers, Bull Terriers, Pitbull Terriers, Rottweilers, Great Danes, German and Belgian Shepherds, Japanese fighting dogs, large Japanese spitzes, mastiffs, Illyrian Shepherd Dogs and their cross breeds, shall be kept in public area on leash and, at all times, with a muzzle. In exceptional cases, French Mastiffs and Neapolitan Mastiffs can be kept in public area on leash, but without a muzzle.
