GETTING MARRIED IN CROATIA
In order to get married in Croatia all inquiries should be addressed to the Registry office which will conduct the ceremony. More information and contact details can be found at https://mpudt.gov.hr/registers/25389 . Public documents issued by the British authorities need to be legalized at the Legalization Office with an Apostille stamp www.fco.gov.uk/legalisation and translated into Croatian by an official interpreter in the UK (a list of Croatian interpreters in the UK is available in the Consular Section of this web site) or by a certified court interpreter in Croatia.

REGISTERING MARRIAGE IN CROATIA
Croatian nationals who have married overseas - including the UK - are obliged to register their marriage in the Republic of Croatia.
Registering a marriage can be done:

  • Directly at the Registry Office in the Republic of Croatia according to the place of residence if a person has Croatian address in the passport or ID, or at Registry Office Centar in Zagreb if a person has no registered address in Croatia (the list of Croatian Registry Offices is available on https://mpudt.gov.hr/registers/25389 or
  • By applying for registration through the Croatian Embassy by appointment only (appointment should be requested through https://konzularniportal.mvep.hr/?lang=en).
Applicant must submit the following:
  1. Proof of identity and citizenship - Croatian passport or identity card (the Embassy does not retain the document)
  2. Foreign passport if applicant has one (the Embassy does not retain the document)
  3. A UK Copy of an Entry of a Marriage Certificate - must be legalized by the Legalization Office (www.fco.gov.uk/legalisation  ) with an Apostille stamp - paper version and translated into Croatian by an official interpreter in the UK (a list of Croatian interpreters in the UK is available in the Consular Section of this web site) or by a certified court interpreter in Croatia. Document is retained at the official archives in Croatia,

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR CROATIAN NATIONALS BORN OUTSIDE OF CROATIA:
Applicants must have registered their birth in Croatian Registry in order to proceed with registering their marriage.
PROCESSING TIME: the average duration when the application is processed through the Embassy is 3 to 6 months (due to the fact it is carried out through the diplomatic post); while registering at the Registry Office in Croatia can be done quicker (in a day).
Applicant may authorize a person in Croatia to make the application on their behalf at the Registry directly by providing them with original letter off power of attorney with signature verified by the Embassy (for notary service please check Notary section of this website) and legalized and translated UK marriage certificate.
The Embassy reserves the right to request additional documents while conducting legally binding proceedings related to each request submitted.
