UN Security Council Debate on Kosovo

Stalni predstavnik RH pri Ujedinjenim narodima, veleposlanik Neven Jurica, održao je govor u Vijecu sigurnosti UN-a o stanju na Kosovu.

Mr. President, may I start in joining others in welcoming the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Serbia Mr. Vuk Jeremic and the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Kosovo Mr. Skender Hyseni to the chamber. And also, I would like to thank SRSG Mr. Lamberto Zanier for presenting his report. I would like to start my statement by underlying that we deem that a simple fact that a Republic of Kosovo has come into being as a newly established state is important, and an important contribution for overall peace, security and stability in Southeast Europe. Ensuring Kosovo's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity is fundamental to achieving long term and irreversible stabilization in this corner of the European continent, and to see it fully integrated into a stable and prosperous European future. In this regard, Mr. President, we applaud the European Union for continuing its efforts in advancing a European perspective for all the countries in that region, based on their reform efforts and individual accomplishments. The European Union has proven to be a major force for positive change and a motor of much needed reforms. We also expect that the European Union Rule of Law mission - EULEX – will ensure and aid in further solidifying Kosovo's independence and sovereignty, as well as, offer its assistance in the development of democracy and the rule of law - as the most visible and symbolic proof of this engagement. We welcome the decision of the Secretary General to proceed with a further reconfiguration of UNMIK and thus facilitate deployment of EULEX throughout Kosovo. Croatia signed an agreement with the EU on 24 November 2008, enabling my country to participate in EULEX. By doing this, we have added our support to regional stability in Southeast Europe, and in this way added to our longstanding offer of transferring assistance, experience and know-how. Finally, Mr. President, we reiterate our call upon the authorities in both countries, Serbia and Kosovo, and to all citizens of Kosovo – regardless of their ethnicity – to continue cooperating with the UN, NATO and the EU in order to ensure continued peace, security and stability. I would like to finish by expressing our desire to see both countries, the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Kosovo, invest substantive efforts into building good neighborly relations between their two nations. Thank you, Mr. President.
