State Secretary Metelko-Zgombić attends Ukraine Accountability Conference

A Croatian delegation led by State Secretary for Europe Andreja Metelko-Zgombić attended the Ukraine Accountability Conference held on 14 July 2022 in The Hague.

The participants agreed to step up and coordinate various forms of assistance to investigate the crimes committed in Ukraine.

Addressing the event, Metelko-Zgombić said that the crimes in Ukraine evoked painful memories of the atrocities Croatia had witnessed on its own territory during the 1990s. Our own experience has taught us that prosecuting crimes necessitates gathering and storing evidence, she underscored, adding that Croatia welcomed amendments to the Eurojust Regulation.

The state secretary said Croatia supported the national and international efforts to investigate and prosecute crimes, announcing that we would offer assistance to the ICC in terms of seconding our prosecutors. She recalled other forms of assistance that Croatia had offered Ukraine, such as demining, forensics and DNA analysis, adding that we must not forget support for the victims. Apart from children and the elderly, special care has to be offered to female victims of violence, where Croatia can offer its experience.

The participants adopted a Political Declaration.
