The Republic of Croatia is a member of the United Nations since 1992 and is taking part in its activities through its permanent representations in New York, Vienna and Geneva, as well as to UNESCO in Paris. During that time, Croatia has been recognized as a responsible member that has made a mark by actively participating in the United Nations’ most important bodies (the Security Council, ECOSOC and Peacebuilding Commission), as well as through the Croatian experts’ participation in its various expert bodies.

The Republic of Croatia continues to strongly support the United Nations’ main activities, most notably the preservation of global peace and security, post-conflict peacebuilding and development assistance, the strengthening of democracy, full respect for human rights, fundamental freedoms and humanitarian law, meeting the Millennium Development Goals, achieving sustainable development and facing the challenges of climate change. Also, Croatia is making a special contribution as a provider of peacekeeping forces too, as a country that itself has experienced the importance and challenges of the UN peacekeeping missions. Having faith in the vision and mission of the United Nations, Croatia will continue to promote the idea of multiculturalism and participate in the efforts aimed at advancing and increasing the effectiveness of the organization’s activities.

With the intent to keep strengthening its role within the UN, Croatia expects to be re-elected to the Peacebuilding Commission at the end of the year and on 1 January 2012 begin its new two-year mandate. Next year, Croatia will also try to join ECOSOC for the 2013-2015 period, as well as get re-elected to the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions for the same period.
