Minister Pusić: We’re working with EU on natural disaster prevention project

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Vesna Pusić stated that Croatia could apply independently for assistance from the European Solidarity Fund once the flood subsided and damage was estimated. The amount of appraised damage to public areas and infrastructure must be over EUR 280 million in order to make Croatia eligible. “There is another possibility, and that is redirecting a piece of the EUR 11 billion set aside for Croatia for a seven-year period into reconstructing that part of Croatia so that normal life and normal functioning could resume,” Pusić said. “Right now we are lobbying for a project that would include Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, and which would be aimed at preventing such natural disasters in the future – regulating the Sava River, canals, embankments, all that is necessary,” she added. Pusić thanked Croatian citizens who, she underlined, had helped not only Slavonia but our neighbours in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia as well.

The minister said that the government assumed the coordination of assistance in immediate danger and cleanup as well as communication with other countries and international organizations.
