SANTIAGO, Jan 26 (Hina) - Croatia intends to intensify relations with Uruguay both economically and politically, Croatian First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Vesna Pusić said in Santiago on Saturday after meeting with Uruguayan President Jose Mujica.

The two officials met on the fringes of a summit of the European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.

"We agreed that Uruguay should... accredit an ambassador either in Vienna or Rome," Pusić said, adding that this would pave the way for cooperation.

"We have in common the fact that we are beautiful countries, with a relatively large territory and a relatively low population, so we have a similar orientation... We must have a highly educated population so that we can utilise our comparative advantages. That's why we agreed on the possibility of cooperation on the level of universities."

Pusić said President Mujica was a person of high moral integrity. "He suffered incredible torture, he was imprisoned for 14 years. He is a man who has shown incredible courage and resilience."

She said Mujica was a positive image of the development not only of Uruguay but the entire Latin America, and that he had retained the ideals and values from his youth, a time of the struggle for equality and social justice.
