On Friday, 10 October 2003, on the occasion of the visit of Mr. Freddy Thielemans, Mayor of Brussels to Zagreb, from 9 - 11 October 2003, Ms. Vlasta Pavić, Mayor of Zagreb and Mr. Freddy Thielemans, signed the Joint Declaration on Cooperation between Zagreb and Brussels, in the Dverce Palace.
The joining of the two cities has been initiated and supported by the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia in Brussels. The partnership between the two cities will cover the exchange of views and experiences in the filed of activities and jurisdiction of city administration. The cooperation in the fields of culture, art, education, sport, tourism international relations and economy is foreseen. The two majors notably committed themselves to pay particular attention to the strengthening of European integration, as well as to affirm joint interests of cities at the European level. For the next year, several major projects have already been agreed, as well as the visit of the economic delegation of the Brussels region.
On Friday, Mr. Stjepan Mesić, President of the Republic of Croatia, received Mayor of Brussels. Mr. Thielemans reiterated to President Mesić, and previously to other city leaders, that he would support the speedy entry of Croatia in the European Union, as he convinced himself during his visit that Zagreb and Croatia are both part of Europe in terms of cultural and economic standards.
