Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Marija Pejčinović Burić 22 April 2018 attended a meeting of the G7 foreign ministers with seven female ministers from non-member countries.

Canada is presiding over the G7 1 January-31 December 2018. Its priorities include equality and empowerment of women as a key factor in building peace, reducing poverty and economic growth. In that regard, Canada organized a meeting of the G7 foreign ministers with female foreign ministers from around the globe. Pejčinović Burić attended the meeting as the only foreign minister from Europe. The other six were foreign ministers of Ecuador, Ghana, Guatemala, Jamaica, Colombia and Panama. The meeting discussed the status and role of women in promoting peace and security, as well as the need to support women while resolving and defusing conflicts worldwide. Pejčinović Burić underlined Croatia’s contributions to that end, adding that in terms of gender equality our country had made an impressive progress at the legislative and institutional levels and also in practice. Concerning the inclusion of women in the security sector and diplomacy, Croatia is at the forefront among the EU and NATO member countries.

Pejčinović Burić spoke about Croatia’s experiences from the war of independence in the 1990s and the peaceful reintegration of its region in the Danube basin, underscoring the percentage of women participating in Croatia’s defence and security sector and diplomacy.

The meeting was a preparation for the meeting of all the world’s female foreign ministers, which will be held during Canada’s G7 presidency and ahead of the UN General Assembly in September this year.
