Croatian Embassy to UK, in cooperation with British Library’s Slavonic Section, organized in London symposium The Renaissance of Marko Marulić (Split, 1450-1524)

The symposium was opened by Croatian Ambassador to the UK Ivica Tomić and the British Library’s Director of Scholarship and Collections Ronald Milne. Numerous scientists and experts then held a series of lectures on Marko Marulić and his opus, with an emphasis on the Croatian-British ties.

It was the first time Great Britain saw a scientific gathering at which Croatian and British experts presented the “father of Croatian literature” and the interesting ties between Great Britain and his works. It was also the first time that rare editions of Marulić’s books from the British Library collection were displayed in public, which met with great interest from the populous crowd.

Librarians and curators for old manuscripts and rare editions, as well as professors and students from the universities of London, Cambridge and Oxford were delighted by the symposium, which is sure to incite new research into Marulić’s opus. Similarly, while preparing the symposium, experts from the British Library discovered new data regarding Marulić’s books in their collection. Also, some of the eminent British historians said Marulić was a great find to them, as he was one of the most prolific and widely-read authors in the Renaissance Europe.
