On 20 October 2003, Mr. Ivan Šimonović, Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Croatia, was in a one-day working visit to Ireland. Mr. Šimonović met with Mr. Dick Roche, Minister of State for European Affairs of Ireland, Mr. Eoin O'Leary, Assistant Secretary at the European and International Affairs Division, and Mr. Michael Woods, Chairman of the Joint Foreign Affairs Committee of the Parliament.

The visit was realised within the forthcoming Irish presidency of the EU in the first half of 2004, during which the avis of the European Commission on the Croatian application for membership in the Union is awaited, as well as the decision on the allocation of the candidate status. Irish interlocutors expressed their support to Croatia on its path to becoming a member of the Union and indicated the importance of continuing the EU enlargement after the entry of 10 new members. They also reported on the priorities of the forthcoming Irish presidency of the EU.

Mr. Šimonović held a lecture at the Institute of European Affairs in Dublin on the topic “Approaching of Croatia to the EU” for representatives of diplomatic corps, MPs and representatives of public life in Ireland.
