Croatia celebrates Statehood Day

Today we celebrate the day on which in 1991 the Croatian Parliament adopted a resolution on Croatia’s sovereignty and independence, confirming the Croatian people’s will to establish an independent state.

Today, with exceptional gratitude and respect, we remember all those who defended Croatia, whose courage, determination and perseverance built the foundations of our Homeland.

Croatia today is a member state of key international organizations and initiatives, underlining its place and importance in international relations, the promotion of democracy and human rights, as well as cooperation and understanding among nations, and in the strengthening of national security.

This year we mark the 10th anniversary of NATO membership, the main guarantor of security and stability, and after six years of EU membership we are carrying on with preparations for entering the Schengen Area and eurozone. In the first half of 2020, Croatia will for the first time preside over the Council of the EU, which represents the biggest foreign-policy project since the gaining of independence, as well as an opportunity to further promote our country.

On behalf of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, we wish all the Croatian citizens as well as the Croats at home and abroad a happy Statehood Day!
