Annual conference of ambassadors, consuls general

The conference of ambassadors and consuls generals started 23 August 2018

The conference of ambassadors and consuls generals started 23 August 2018. “All well-developed diplomacies hold similar annual events, and the present government introduced this practice systematically and at the highest level. This conference became a regular annual gathering of diplomats as well as an opportunity for informal talks and exchange of views and experiences on current issues: those that marked the period since our last gathering, principal foreign-policy challenges as well as the priorities of Croatia’s foreign and European policy,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Marija Pejčinović Burić in her keynote address.

The conference was opened by President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and Pejčinović Burić. They outlined for the ambassadors and consuls general guidelines for their work and discussed the ways of promoting Croatia’s foreign-policy interests.

Six thematic panels are planned for the conference, to be attended by deputy prime ministers and ministers, president of the Croatian Chamber of Economy and officials from various ministries.

Geopolitical and security challenges as well as preparations for Croatia’s chairmanship of the Council of the EU in 2020 were the topics of the first day of the conference.

“We discussed the organizational and substantive aspects of the preparations. It will be an opportunity for our continued foreign-policy affirmation as well as cultural and economic promotion,” said Pejčinović Burić.

The conference continues on Friday 24 August with discussions on economic and public diplomacy as well as the functioning of the foreign affairs service.
