Thirteen candidates in Croatian Presidential Elections
The Croatian State Election Commission announced that it has received a total of 13 candidacies for the new Croatian President. Candidates had until midnight December 13 to deliver the required 10,000 signatures to secure a place on the ballot.
The presidential elections are scheduled for January 2. It will be the fourth presidential election since Croatia gained independence in 1992.
There were 22 candidacies presented to the State Elections, but nine were without the necessary number of signatures of citizen support. The Election Commission now has 48 hours to confirm the signatures of the 13 candidates. After that, it will make public an alphabetic list of the candidates that are expected to run in the upcoming elections.
The alphabetic list of the 13 received candidacies includes: Djurdja Adlesic, Miroslav Ciro Blazevic, Ljubo Cesic-Rojs, Mladen Keser, Jadranka Kosor, Doris Kosta, Anto Kovacevic, Slaven Letica, Stjepan Mesic, Boris Miksic, Ivic Pasalic, Tomislav Petrak and Miroslav Rajh.
The official start of the pre-election campaign is December 16. Candidates have until midnight December 31 to campaign, and then a 48-hour ban on electioneering goes into force.
As stated in the Constitution of the Republic of Croatia, the president is elected by a majority vote in a direct election. If no candidate wins a majority, then a second round of elections is held after 14 days. The two candidates who win the largest amount of votes in the first election stand in the second round. The President is elected for a five-year term and is limited to two terms.
