The First Summit of the Lower-Middle Income Countries Initiative G11 is being held in Jordanian tourist resort at the Dead Sea. The Initiative calls for partnership with the most developed countries of the world G8 aiming at reduction of debt of developing countries. The delegation of the Republic of Croatia to the Summit was headed by H. E. President Mr. Stjepan Mesic.
The Summit was presided by the King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, H.M. Abdullah II who launched the Initiative G11 in September 2005. The G11 includes Jordan, Croatia, Ecuador, Salvador, Georgia, Honduras, Indonesia, Morocco, Pakistan, Paraguay and Sri Lanka. At the outset, the Jordanian sovereign emphasized that appropriate initiatives have been recognized that should further be perfected in order to achieve cooperation between G11 and G8. These initiatives include investments in developing of infrastructures of developing countries, support for small and medium entrepreneurships, scientific and development researches and technology transfer. In that framework the G8 countries are being invited to establish official and institutional relations with the G11. The two groups should meet in Berlin by the end of this year.
The President of the Republic of Croatia Mr. Stjepan Mesic took part in the panel discussion at the World Economic Forum that was held at the same time, describing Croatia as a success story. The President portrayed the years of aggression against Croatia and also the years of the post conflict reconciliation during which Croatia transformed into one of the most developed economies in the region. Croatia today has momentum in reforming its system to be compatible with the European Union. Croatia is expected to join the European Union by the end of the decade. Croatia also progressed from a country that recently has been receiving the United Nation Peace Keeping forces to a country that today contributes to eleven United Nations Peace Keeping Operations.
At the margins of the World Economic Forum, President Mesic held bilateral talks with the King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan H. M. Abdullah II, the President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan H. E. Mr. Hamid Karzai, Vice-president of the Republic of Iraq H. E. Mr. Tariq al-Hashimi and the Secretary General of the League of Arab States H. E. Mr. Amr Moussa.
