Croatian President Stjepan Mesic arrived in Paris to attend on Sunday a summit of 43 presidents and prime ministers at which the Union for the Mediterranean will be established. Mesic welcomed the idea to set up the union, saying it "is a great opportunity for countries (on the Mediterranean) to cooperate more, because if the Mediterranean could cooperate in the Antiquity and in the Middle Ages, it's logical that it should cooperate today as well". The Paris summit of 43 heads of state or government that inaugurated a Union for the Mediterranean ended on Sunday evening with the unanimous adoption of a joint declaration, French President Nicolas Sarkozy announced. Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, who led the Croatian delegation, said that Croatia fully supported the Union for the Mediterranean. "This summit is a success, and we hope that it will produce positive results in all countries. A body is being formed that will help achieve cooperation in the Mediterranean in all areas, in culture, in the economy and on the political level. Croatia fully supports the Union for the Mediterranean," Mesic said after the meeting. President Mesic met his Egyptian counterpart Hosni Mubarak in Paris on Saturday for talks on bilateral relations and the situation in the Middle East. "We had an opportunity to talk once again about the problems facing the world today, but the most important crisis is the one generating all other crises, and that's the Palestine-Israel issue. We also talked about issues regarding the wider region as well as about our relations," Mesic told the press. He said Mubarak agreed to visit Croatia as soon as possible.
