State Secretary in the Ministry of Defence Pjer Simunovic during his visit to Washington (USA) held a meeting at the State Department with Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs Andrew Shapiro. They discussed cooperation within the NATO Alliance, especially the cooperation in the ISAF, and emphasized the importance of international cooperation in the development of capabilities. The U.S. side stressed its readiness to continue with the previous level of military assistance through various funds, as well as the possibility of their increase in the future. The importance of the Croatian role in the Military Police School in Kabul, and the Croatian contribution to the NATO mission in Kosovo was particularly highlighted.
MOD State Secretary Simunovic met at the Pentagon with the Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Alexander Vershbow. The meeting was also attended by the Croatian Ambassador to the U.S. Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic, Croatian military attaché in the U.S. and Canada Brigadier General Mate Padjen and assistant military attaché in U.S. and Canada, Major Robert Katic.
On the meeting they discussed cooperation in NATO and Afghanistan, especially through A-5 initiative and the Croatian contribution to the Military Police School in Kabul, the situation in Libya, the situation in the region, the new capabilities of military-technical cooperation in Southeast Europe, and the development of Croatian strategic defence documents that support the development of the required military capabilities.
As part of his visit to Washington (U.S.), MOD State Secretary Simunovic held a lecture at Johns Hopkins University, EU Center of Excellence Washington DC, entitled "A National Security reshaped - Focus on Croatia". Simunovic in his lecture spoke about the transformation of the Croatian national security strategy, the responsibilities of Croatia as NATO member, Croatian accession to the European Union, and on the participation of the Croatian Armed Forces in NATO peacekeeping operations.
