Joint statement on the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Portugal and Croatia

In February 2022, Portugal and Croatia celebrate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations. Portugal recognised the independence of Croatia on the 15th of January 1992, during the Portuguese Presidency of the European Economic Community, and diplomatic relations were established on the 3rd of February 1992.

During these last 30 years, our countries have maintained fruitful and ever closer bilateral relations, both at a bilateral level and as of July 1st 2013 as members of the European Union.

Croatia and Portugal share, nowadays, several interests in multiple areas which aim at further bringing closer our two countries and, what is more important, our peoples. The successful cooperation during our respective EU Presidencies testify to the deep mutual understanding and cooperation on the EU level between our two countries.

The excellent political bilateral relations between our countries are indeed evidenced by the high-level visits that took place in the last few years, such as H. E. the President of the Portuguese Republic State Visit to Croatia in 2017 and H.E. the President of the Republic of Croatia State Visit to Portugal in 2018.

On this date, Portugal and Croatia envisage to further strengthen bilateral relations on political, economic, and cultural levels, as well as to reinforce our cooperation, in the context of the European Union, NATO, the United Nations and other international multilateral fora.
