The Republic of Croatia welcomes the first parliamentary election in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan organised independently by the Afghan authorities.

The election taking place on 18 September 2010 shows the democratic progress of the Afghan society after the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001.

Both sides are particularly happy about the fact that candidates include a great number of women and representatives of a younger generation.

This election is an important step towards building an independent society to the benefit of Afghan citizens.

The Republic of Croatia will continue to actively support the development of civil society in Afghanistan.

On Monday, 20 September 2010, the Director of the Department for Neighbouring States and Southeast Europe, MSc. Davor Vidiš, and Head of the Independent Service for Croatians in Overseas States and Culture, Petar Barišić, received representatives of the St. Nicholas Janjevo Association of Croatians: President of the Association Sebastijan Čolakić, Vice-president of the Association Nikola Rodić, the parish priest of Janjevo Fr.
