State Secretary Metelko-Zgombić officially visits France

State Secretary Andreja Metelko-Zgombić paid an official visit to France on November 20, 2024. During the visit, she held meetings with Jean-François Rapin, Chair of the Senate’s European Affairs Committee; Pieyre-Alexandre Anglade, Chair of the National Assembly’s European Affairs Committee; Alexis Dutertre, the President’s Europe Advisor; and Benjamin Haddad, Minister Delegate for at the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.
 
The discussions focused on bilateral relations and the exchange of views on various EU issues. Regarding bilateral relations, the strong ties between Croatia and France were reaffirmed, bolstered by the 2021 Strategic Partnership Agreement and the accompanying 2023 Action Plan. Economic relations between the Republic of Croatia and the French Republic are strong, with potential for further growth. Defence cooperation has been enhanced and spans multiple areas, including the procurement of 12 Rafale aircraft and other joint projects.
 
On EU-related topics, opinions were exchanged on key issues, including EU enlargement, the next Multiannual Financial Framework, EU competitiveness, migration, and support for Ukraine. The talks confirmed a high level of agreement between the two countries. Concerning enlargement, the importance of maintaining the principle of merit-based progress was emphasized. Both countries view EU enlargement as a critical investment in Europe's security. Regarding competitiveness, the importance of strengthening the EU’s industrial and innovation base to maintain global competitiveness was underlined.
 
On Ukraine, it was reaffirmed that the EU must remain steadfast in its support for Ukraine's efforts to defend against Russian aggression, especially in light of the evolving geopolitical landscape. On migration, the need for consistent implementation of the Pact on Migration and Asylum was highlighted, with a particular focus on return policies and forging strategic partnerships with third countries. The Mediterranean region remains a key area of focus for the EU in this context.
