State Secretary Andreja Metelko-Zgombić 16 September 2019 in Brussels attended a meeting of the General Affairs Council (GAC).

The Council discussed the next multiannual financial framework (MFF), preparations for the European Council meeting of 17-18 October, enhancing respect for the rule of law in the EU and the Article 7(1) TEU procedure concerning Hungary.

In regard to the 2021-2027 MFF, the Finnish presidency outlined preparations for the exchange of views at the October European Council.

At the European Council meeting in 17-18 October, apart from said MFF, the leaders will also discuss the follow-up to the 2019-2024 Strategic Agenda, external relations and Brexit. Croatia underlined the importance of sending positive messages in terms of enlargement policy and in regard to launching accession talks with North Macedonia and Albania.

During the debate on the rule of law, the ministers discussed how the Council could contribute to the overall aim of strengthening the rule of law in the EU, and what specific measures could be used. The debate will continue at the November meeting.

The Council also held a hearing under the Article 7(1) TEU procedure concerning Hungary.
