State Secretary Metelko-Zgombić attends FAC; Eastern Partnership meeting

State Secretary for Europe Andreja Metelko-Zgombić on Monday in Brussels attended a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) and a ministerial meeting of the Eastern Partnership.
 
The Foreign Affairs Council exchanged views on the Russian aggression against Ukraine, notably the systematic attacks on civilians. Ministers reiterated strong support for Ukraine through EPF and EUMAM, as well as for the reconstruction of the country, ensuring accountability for crimes, accommodating Ukrainian refugees and aid during harsh winter conditions. Metelko-Zgombić underscored Croatia’s readiness to continue supporting Ukraine in any way possible and announced additional financial assistance for Ukrainian people during winter. She applauded the efforts to ensure accountability for war crimes as well as continued discussion on sustainable ways to finance the reconstruction of Ukraine. The state secretary also highlighted the importance of countering food supply crisis in the European neighbourhood by stepping up the delivery of Ukrainian grain to the affected countries, where Croatia can help with its port and transport infrastructure.
 
The Council had an exchange of views on Iran in light of the latest developments in and outside the country. Ministers condemned the repression of the ongoing protests and Iran’s military cooperation with Russia. They also discussed the prospects of renewal of the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action).
The Council also exchanged views on the Southern Neighbourhood. Metelko-Zgombić called for a swift implementation of joint priorities, underlining the importance of strengthening cooperation in energy, where Croatia can contribute with its existing infrastructure.
 
Ministers voiced concern over the deteriorating situation in North Kosovo, condemning the attack on EULEX members and calling on the Serb community to remove barricades immediately. The Council called on both sides to refrain from violence and return to negotiations.
 
In addition, the Council exchanged views on Moldova, Tunisia, and the Global Gateway.
 
The meeting of the Eastern Partnership saw foreign ministers of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. The participants backed the strengthening of EU’s support to and cooperation with said countries, notably in the area of security, economy, institutional reform and energy independence.
