State Secretary Matušić participates in informal meeting of EU development ministers

State Secretary for Political Affairs Frano Matušić on Monday participated in an informal meeting of EU development ministers.

The meeting focused on finding sustainable solutions to the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, where more than 18 million people need help, while the social and economic instability threatens to destabilize the entire region.

Matušić underlined Croatia’s support for continued humanitarian assistance to the most vulnerable groups, while respecting the key principles of humanitarian action.

The rights of women and girls are especially important to Croatia, the state secretary said, recalling Croatia’s announced contribution of EUR 120,000 to UN OCHA for the most urgent humanitarian needs, such as food and fresh water, toiletries, shelter, education and so forth.

Conclusively, the participants underscored the importance of coordination and unity in Europe’s approach to Afghan recovery, so that the situation of 2015 caused by the Syrian crisis would not repeat.
