State Secretary for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Zdenko Lucić on Friday in Brussels attended a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council in its development configuration. The meeting was chaired by Josep Borrell, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Also in attendance was International Partnerships Commissioner Jutta Urpilainen.

The participants discussed the situation in Ukraine and the looming global food security crisis as well as the related multilateral response. Lucić underscored the importance of continued food supply, the unblocking of Ukraine’s export ports and building more resilient and self-sufficient forms of agriculture, especially concerning the least developed countries.

The ministers had an informal exchange of views with UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, who provided an overview of the global situation and the work carried out by the UNHCR. Lucić reported on Croatia’s cooperation with the UNHCR. Recently, a project has been implemented underlining the importance of continuous education and finding distance learning modes for Syrian refugee children in Lebanon. Croatia has also implemented a comprehensive framework for the accommodation and social inclusion of Ukrainian refugees, 18,000 of which have so far entered Croatia.
