State Secretary Božinović thanked for the continuous assistance Latvia had been lending Croatia on its way to NATO, pointing out the importance of the Saeima during the ratification of the Protocol on NATO Enlargement to Croatia (Latvia was the second NATO member to ratify it). State Secretary Božinović thanked for the continuous support for Croatia’s EU membership as well. He informed his collocutor about the current status of Croatia’s negotiations, with a special emphasis on Chapter 23: Judiciary and Fundamental Rights, and Chapter 8: Competition Policy, expressing hope that they would be opened at one of the coming Intergovernmental Conferences.

State Secretary Božinović also informed him about the activities Croatia is undertaking to further improve the friendly relations with all the countries on the region, as well as about the assistance Croatia is offering them in their process of the Euro-Atlantic integration.

Saeima Speaker Daudze said he hoped Croatia’s accession negotiations would be completed by the end of this year and spoke in favour of the continuation of the committee-level cooperation between the two countries’ parliaments. He pointed out that Latvia, as part of the parliamentary cooperation, is willing to transfer to Croatia the experiences from the pre-accession process, as well as the experiences gained after joining the EU.

Exchanging the experiences with NATO, the collocutors agreed that its membership is the absolute guarantee of peace and security. They agreed that countries of similar size and history should act together in the realization of their interests and goals within the Euro-Atlantic integration.
