Acting Secretary General Sebastian Rogač on 1 September 2020 held phone consultations with Christopher Cutajar, the State Secretary at the Maltese Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.

Rogač underscored that Croatia and Malta both belonged to the Mediterranean, which provides additional incentive for intensifying bilateral cooperation, both political and economic. Rogač thanked Malta for donating medical and protective gear for the fight against COVID-19, which once again highlighted the two countries’ friendship. He added that Croatia wished to strengthen bilateral dialogue with Malta on matters related to the EU, Mediterranean and Southeast Europe. The two officials exchanged views on the fight against the pandemic, migratory pressure and security challenges in the Mediterranean. Rogač stressed that the EU’s response should be comprehensive and based on solidarity among the member states. The two officials underlined positions that additional efforts were needed to resolve the tensions in the Mediterranean and European neighbourhood peacefully and through diplomatic and political channels. Rogač and Cutajar supported the EU enlargement towards Europe’s southeast, emphasizing the importance of maintaining stability and security in the region.
