Regarding statement by Marjan Podobnik, President of Slovenian National Association at Slovenian People’s Party, on HRT show “Otvoreno”

Regarding the statement by Marjan Podobnik, the President of the Slovenian National Association at the Slovenian People’s Party, made on the Croatian Radio Television’s (HRT) show “Otvoreno” on 5 February 2007, the topic of which were the relations between Croatia and Slovenia, stating that Croatia “had forged the cadastre”, calling it an unprecedented act in the history of international relations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, based on an official letter from the State Geodetic Directorate of Croatia, would like to state the following:

Not wishing to go into a discussion about the theses put by Mr. Podobnik, the MFAEI would like to point to a completely false statement, and pursuant to that a completely baseless qualification, about Croatia “forging the cadastre”. The relevant Croatian bodies kept the cadastre during the former country, and continued to do so after Croatia’s gaining of independence, for the area south of the St. Odorik canal, located within the Croatian national territory.

We are talking about the official cadastre records of the Republic of Croatia, kept since 1963. The area south of the St. Odorik canal falls within the jurisdiction of the Pazin local office for cadastre, the Buje outpost, which also implements all of the changes occurring in that area.

The MFAEI would like to point out that said statement by Mr. Podobnik is and example of how unfamiliarity with or deliberate twisting of the facts can lead to wrong conclusions, wrong convictions and unfounded expectations, transferred onto the public as well.
