The Croatian Government nominated yesterday Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Marija Pejčinović Burić for the position of Secretary-General of the Council of Europe

The Croatian Government nominated yesterday Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Marija Pejčinović Burić for the position of Secretary-General of the Council of Europe.

The Council of Europe is the oldest international European organization, celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. Pejčinović Burić chaired the Committee of Ministers on behalf of Croatia May-November 2018.

The new Secretary-General will be elected by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe at the session in June 2019. In line with the procedure, the Committee of Ministers will interview the candidates separately in March and decide upon a final list of candidates that will be submitted to the Parliamentary Assembly. The mandate of the new Secretary-General starts on 1 October 2019 and lasts for five years.
