A monument to Montenegrin admiral Vladimir Barović was unveiled on Monday on the island of Vis. Attending the ceremony were foreign ministers of Croatia and Montenegro, Gordan Grlić Radman and Ranko Krivokapić, defence ministers Mario Banožić and Raško Konjević, and the Mayor of Vis Ivo Radica.

In his address, Grlić Radman stressed the importance of fostering the culture of remembrance, adding that the unveiling of the monument tied in with the previous year’s commemoration of the Croat victims of Morinj camp. “Barović’s act of humanity and disobeying evil symbolizes the values that remain a testament to the relations based on mutual respect. He was deeply aware that the army he was a commander in had dishonourable, occupant and criminal intentions. On that September day, the single bullet he fired was his only way out of the hellish plan of the Yugoslav People's Army against Croatia,” the minister said.

“His last words inscribed on this plaque are a testament to the fundamental principles that we should all nurture, one nation for another, one man for another. This is a monument in remembrance of a man who placed honour above orders and rather took his own life than to destroy Dalmatians towns and the Croat people,” underlined Grlić Radman.

He concluded his address by saying that Croatia and Montenegro would continue to strengthen good-neighbourly relations and work on outstanding issues, and that Croatia would continue to support strongly Montenegro’s EU journey.

Defence Minister Banožić stressed that after more than three decades we had an opportunity to mark a historical moment for all of us. “The joint commemoration of Barović’s act is an important step in our relations as well as in the cooperation between our navies, who teach deterrence rather than warfare. This is precisely what Barović did, saving Vis from the ugly scenes that other parts of Croatia were subjected to during the Homeland War,” he said, adding that the monument to Barović communicated to future generations what he meant for our countries and our diplomatic relations.
