First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Vesna Pusić will be attending the 68th session of the UN General Assembly, held 23-27 September in New York. The Croatian delegation will be headed by President Ivo Josipović.

Pusić will chair a high-level ministerial meeting of the Peacebuilding Commission on “Economic Empowerment of Women in Peacebuilding”, which will take place on Thursday 26 September.

The meeting is being organized on the initiative of Croatia, who is presiding over the Commission this year, in cooperation with UN Women and the Peacebuilding Support Office.

Some 30 countries and representatives of international organizations accepted the invitation, including – alongside Pusić – 21 foreign ministers, secretary general of OIC and executive director of UN Women. A joint declaration is also expected to be passed.

The topic of economic empowerment of women in peacebuilding is important as it stimulates active participation of women and their contribution to the economic recovery of post-conflict countries, while the realization of that goal offers the possibility of linking different specialized UN bodies and, which is crucial, the effects would be visible and measurable in the field.

On Tuesday 24 September, the Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative will be presented at the General Assembly. The initiative was launched by British Foreign Secretary William Hague, while Pusić is among the ministers spearheading it.

Pusić is also to attend a meeting of the Equal Futures Partnership initiative, which also deals with advancing the status of women, and Croatia is one of its partner countries. She will also participate in a meeting of the Education First initiative as well as the Caspian Forum on energy.

The Croatian foreign minister will hold a series of separate bilateral talks with foreign ministers of Iran, Georgia, Angola, Albania and Singapore among others.
