Minister Pusić on Syria

The situation in Syria is critical and everything now points to the use of chemical weapons. Croatia is awaiting a report of the United Nations' inspectors

“The situation in Syria is rapidly deteriorating and approaching the critical point while a series of dramatic events point to the use of chemical weapons on a large scale. At this moment, Croatia is still awaiting the United Nations' inspectors report to be published.

On the other hand, President Obama said the United States is ready, but, as far as I am aware, he has decided to seek approval from the U.S. Congress. For the first time since WW2 the Congress will have a say in the matter. Croatia's position is that an action preventing further bloodshed makes sense, beyond that it doesn't. Of course, there is a procedure that has to be respected and remains to be seen what the UN inspectors will have to say. We always believed that maybe even a dramatic diplomatic action could also bring results. I think now no one can be sure about further development of the situation. We are in close contact with our partners; there is no mention of NATO involvement in any sort of action.”
