First Deputy prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Vesna Pusić met with Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, with whom she discussed bilateral relations and the situation in the South Mediterranean and the Middle East.

Pusić said that the latest political developments in Iran had opened the possibility for progress in international relations, adding that the problems in crisis spots such as Syria and Iraq could hardly be solved without Iran's involvement and that its role would also be important in Afghanistan given the planned wrapping up of the ISAF mission next year. The two officials agreed that it was important to start solving all problems diplomatically because there was no military solution and the longer the crisis lasted, the more difficult a political solution was.

Larijani said solving the problems in crisis spots was in everyone's interest and that Iran was willing to help politically, because the fight against terrorism and preventing the activity of terrorist groups were in its interest.

In regard to Iran's nuclear programme, Larijani said Iran completely understood that Europe wanted security and confirmation that nuclear energy was not being used for military purposes, but that on the other hand Iran wanted to develop its nuclear technology for peacetime purposes, that it accepted the rules and allowed the IAEA to monitor all centres.

Pusić and Larijani agreed there was plenty of room to develop Croatian-Iranian relations, with Larijani underlining Iran’s interest in cooperation between the two chambers of commerce, participation in fairs, the manufacturing of train engines, shipbuilding, and gas supply.
