Minister Grlić Radman meets with Holy See's Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Gallagher

Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Gordan Grlić Radman held talks on Friday in Zagreb with the Secretary for Relations with States of the Holy See, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.
 
In addition to bilateral relations, the discussions focused on the Western Balkans, as well as the current situation in Ukraine and the Middle East. Grlić Radman expressed satisfaction with the close and friendly bilateral relations between Croatia and the Holy See, characterized by a continuous quality and substantive dialogue on numerous topics of mutual interest. The minister recalled that this year marks the 30th anniversary of Pope John Paul II's first visit to Croatia. He also expressed gratitude that, prior to the visit, Archbishop Gallagher accepted the invitation from the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia to the Holy See to lead the mass at St. Jerome’s Church in Rome on May 28, in commemoration of Statehood Day.
 
The talks confirmed the alignment of views regarding the importance of the European path for the countries of the Western Balkans. Grlić Radman reiterated that Croatia, given its special interest in ensuring peace, security, and stability in the Southeast Europe region, remains committed to actively supporting the European perspective of these countries. He sees the fulfilment of the necessary criteria by the Western Balkan countries, as well as the political will for sustainable reform progress, as significant steps contributing to the building of mutual trust and good neighbourly relations. He also highlighted the importance of the European Council's decision to open negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina, as a confirmation of the European Union's interest in the Western Balkans region. Regarding the stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the importance of internal political dialogue and ensuring the equality of all constituent peoples was emphasized. In anticipation of the global peace summit on Ukraine in Switzerland in June, opinions were exchanged on possible contributions to its success.
 
Grlić Radman recalled the various forms of support that Croatia provides to Ukraine, with a special focus on sharing specific Croatian experiences and knowledge from the Homeland War, particularly regarding humanitarian issues such as demining or the rehabilitation of the wounded. Concerning the current situation in Gaza, the importance of finding a political solution as soon as possible was emphasized, as well as steps to protect civilians, deliver humanitarian aid throughout Gaza, and urgently release hostages.
