Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Gordan Grlić Radman on Tuesday met with the Vice-President of the European Commission for Democracy and Demography, Dubravka Šuica.

Šuica informed Grlić Radman about work on the Conference on the Future of Europe, the impact of demographic changes on Europe’s global position, the Long-Term Rural Vision as well as social issues such as support for the youth and children.

Concerning the Conference on the Future of Europe, Grlić Radman underscored satisfaction that Šuica was in charge of such a crucial topic, given the importance of including citizens in the discussion on the future organization of the EU. “I believe that once the Conference is launched, the vision and basic guidelines for the functioning of the Union will continue to develop in a comprehensive way and include numerous stakeholders. Our European democracy and the effects of demographic changes are crucial for our role in the world, which is why cooperating with the European Commission in this area is so important to us,” said the minister.

“Launching the Conference on the Future of Europe is crucial at the time when the EU is faced with the coronavirus pandemic as well as a number of other challenges, from climate change to the rise of populism and disinformation. It is our role to bring the Union closer to all citizens and transpose their ideas and thoughts into concrete decision-making. The Conference will be crucial in the months and years ahead, together with the process of green, digital and demographic transition,” Šuica said.

The two officials also discussed other topical European matters, such as the importance of coordinating vaccination against COVID-19 at the EU level.
