Minister Grlić Radman attends UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine

As part of UNGA 78, the UN Security Council held a meeting on Ukraine, where Foreign and European Affairs Minister Gordan Grlić Radman delivered an address.
 
The participants, in the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, discussed the situation and challenges in Ukraine, as well as the headway made in finding a peaceful solution.
 
“Croatia supports the efforts to promote accountability for the international crimes in and against Ukraine in all the relevant multilateral forums, including UN, OSCE and the Council of Europe. We have to bear in mind, though, that seeking accountability is not an event, but a long and complicated process. Post-war transition will also be one of the biggest challenges, and Croatia will stand with Ukraine in that regard too”, Grlić Radman underscored.
 
“Ukraine, one of the founders of the UN, has the inalienable right to defend itself and fight for independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. The recognition of these rights is the foundation which the UN is built upon. In that sense – we are all Ukraine,” he said.
 
“As long as the war in Ukraine goes on, the Security Council is also going to be a victim. The General Assembly reacted quickly and with no hesitation, holding an emergency session and providing a platform for the world to condemn the war against Ukraine. This global call offers great value and support for multilateralism. However, in order for the multilateral system to be effective, the world needs fully functional UN bodies committed to their mandates and mutual cooperation. Sadly, we are lacking that at the moment,” the minister said.
 
On the sidelines of the meeting, Grlić Radman signed an agreement with ICRC President Mirjana Špoljarić Egger on sending humanitarian aid to Morocco. He also signed the BBNJ Treaty.
 
In addition, the minister attended a meeting of the US-Adriatic Charter (A5) focused on the security and stability in the Western Balkans. The participants underlined the importance of cooperation among Southeast European countries in order to speed up the Euro-Atlantic integration and maintain stability.
 
Grlić Radman also participated in the High-Level Dialogue on the Declaration Against Arbitrary Detention and a meeting of the Central European Initiative (CEI).
 
Later in the day, he held bilateral talks with Ethiopian Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen Hassen and US Special Representative to the Western Balkans Gabriel Escobar.
