Minister Grlić Radman on Thursday attended the signing of an agreement on the continuation of the reconstruction of a Franciscan monastery of St. Mark the Evangelist in Plehan.

The Plehan monastery is a part of the Franciscan Province of Bosna Srebrena, the community of Bosnian Franciscans whose historical importance in terms of preserving Catholicism and the Croatian national identity in Bosnia is immeasurable. Also immeasurable is the centuries-long contribution of Bosnian Franciscans to education, science and humanitarian work.

In his address, Grlić Radman strongly supported the stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as its European journey, which guarantees higher standards in all areas of life – in the interest of Bosnia and Herzegovina, local Croats and the Republic of Croatia. “Croatia insists that Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina be able to elect their political representatives in government and be equal to the other two constituent peoples in the country, without which democratic institutions cannot function,” he said.

Furthermore, Grlić Radman underlined that the Croatian Government would continue to invest in preserving the objects that for centuries had been the haves for Croatian people and which had cherished the Croatian language, culture and arts. “The projects in Bosnia and Herzegovina that are backed by the Croatian Government, which apart from supporting religious communities include investments in health and education, scholarships, culture and infrastructure, highlight Croatia’s lasting commitment and policy towards Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” the minister said.

The Plehan monastery, along with numerous other Catholic sacral objects, suffered destruction during the Homeland War. Grlić Radman underscored that these and similar initiatives aimed at reconstructing the sacral and national heritage of BiH Croats would continue to get strong support from the Croatian Government and himself personally.
