Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Gordan Grlić Radman attended an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers, held on 27 and 28 August 2020 in Berlin. The ministers discussed Belarus, situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and EU-Russia relations. On the margins of the meeting, the ministers held informal talks with Israeli Foreign Minister Gabriel Ashkenazi.
The situation in Belarus is still cause for concern, while continued violence is inacceptable. The ministers underscored support for the sovereignty and independence of Belarus, condemned the violence and repression against citizens and called on the Belarus authorities to launch an inclusive national dialogue, which is the only way out of the crisis and the only way to instate democracy and respect for fundamental freedoms. In that regard, the EU supports the efforts of the OSCE. The ministers agreed to impose sanctions on those who were involved in electoral fraud and repression of protests, including individuals at the highest political level. The EU will continue to support financially the democratic forces and civil society and provide support in the fight against the COVID-10 pandemic.
Concerning the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the EU-Turkey relations, the ministers expressed solidarity with Greece and Cyprus, underlining the importance of dialogue and constructive engagement, as well as determination in defending the interests of the EU. They agreed the current situation called for stronger diplomatic efforts to defuse the tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean. The ministers called on Turkey to refrain from unilateral activities and open the door to dialogue and development of relations in the interest of both the EU and Turkey. The ministers appreciate Germany’s efforts in seeking solution through negotiations and dialogue between Turkey, Greece and Cyprus. They agreed to impose sanction on those responsible for illegal drilling in the Eastern Mediterranean. If diplomatic efforts fail to yield results, additional measures will be considered. Grlić Radman expressed strong support for the dialogue and engagement with Turkey on all matters of mutual interest. Turkey is a partner country, a candidate and a NATO ally. For Croatia, it is important that the 2016 EU-Turkey Statement on migration continue to be implemented.
In addition, the ministers discussed the implementation of the five guiding principles for the EU-Russia relations of 2016 and considered the possibility of further developing the EU’s policy towards Russia.
On the fringes of the meeting, the EU foreign ministers held informal talks with Israeli Foreign Minister Gabriel Ashkenazi on the Middle East Peace Process, peace and stability in the region, and additional strengthening of the EU-Israel relations.
