Minister Grabar-Kitarović presided over 61st session of UN General Assembly

Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović presided over the 61st session of the UN General Assembly, held 21 September 2006

Minister Grabar-Kitarović presided over the general debate involving heads of state, prime ministers, and foreign ministers. Croatia has been elected as one of the vice-presidents of the General Assembly’s 61st session, continuing the trend of strengthening its international position.

At the margins of the session, Minister Grabar-Kitarović met in separate meetings with the foreign ministers of the Czech Republic, Poland, and Slovakia. Opinions were exchanged on the situation in the South East Europe and the current events in Croatia’s EU and NATO accession process. The ministers confirmed their support for Croatia and offered assistance on its way to the Euro-Atlantic integration.

Minister Grabar-Kitarović also met in separate meetings with the foreign ministers of Guyana, Micronesia, and Singapore. Political and economic bilateral relations were reviewed, with Minister Grabar-Kitarović pointing out Croatia’s engagement in multilateral bodies, where Croatia can offer its experience in the building of peace and institutions. The ministers commended Croatia’s progress on its road to the Euro-Atlantic integration and expressed interest for the strengthening of the bilateral co-operation, especially in economy, as well as the co-operation in multilateral forums.

The same day, Minister Grabar-Kitarović met with Kuwaiti foreign minister, informing him about the current political and economic situation in Croatia and the South East Europe, as well as Croatia’s approaching the Euro-Atlantic integration. The Kuwaiti foreign minister noted the traditionally good relations with the South East Europe, adding that bilateral relations need to be strengthened on that basis, primarily in the field of economy. The meeting also saw the exchange of opinions on the situation in the Middle East.
