Marija Pejčinović Burić, former deputy prime minister and foreign minister, assumes office today as the Council of Europe Secretary-General.

Pejčinović Burić’s election to this prestigious international duty in June is not only a confirmation of her competence and a crown of Croatia’s successful chairmanship of CoE Council of Ministers (May-November 2018), but also a recognition of Croatia’s achievements in policies crucial for CoE: the promotion of democracy, human rights and the rule of law.

By assuming this duty, Pejčinović Burić will become the highest-ranking Croat in an international organization.
