On 19 June 2003, Ms. Dubravka Šimonović, Head of the Department for Human Rights with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Croatia, was elected as Chairperson of the Management Board for Bioethics of the Council of Europe, which covers the areas of human rights, medicine and bioethics.

The last two years, Ms. Šimonović was the Vice Chairperson of the Board for Bioethics, and she is also a member of the National Commission for Biomedicine of the Republic of Croatia. The Board for Bioethics of the Council of Europe has drafted the Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine, Additional Protocol on the Prohibition of Cloning Human Beings and the Additional Protocol on Transplantation of Organs, for which the Republic of Croatia has recently initiated the ratification procedure.

By the election of Ms. Šimonović, the Board is chaired for the first time by an expert from a newly admitted member of the Council of Europe, which is a recognition for expert contribution of the Republic of Croatia to the activities of this organisation.
