Inaugural visit from Latvian Ambassador Jurijs Pogrebņaks
On Thursday, April 10, 2025, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Gordan Grlić Radman received the non-resident Ambassador of the Republic of Latvia to the Republic of Croatia, Jurijs Pogrebņaks, on his inaugural visit.
Both sides expressed satisfaction with the very good and friendly relations between Croatia and Latvia, along with a shared desire to further deepen these ties through the exchange of official visits and thematic consultations. In light of shared security challenges, it was concluded that further investment in security and the development of the defence industry is necessary, which could also contribute to strengthening economic cooperation.
Ambassador Pogrebņaks highlighted that Latvia plans to increase its defence spending to 4 percent of GDP by the end of this year and announced Latvia's intention to withdraw from the Ottawa Convention. The discussion also included continued support for Ukraine and the European perspective of the Western Balkan countries.
Minister Grlić Radman thanked Ambassador Pogrebņaks for Latvia’s support of Croatia’s efforts to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), while Pogrebņaks expressed gratitude to Croatia for its support of Latvia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2026-2027 term.
