Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Marija Pejčinović Burić 23 June 2017 signed on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs the book of condolence for Helmut Kohl.

“With the death of Helmut Kohl, Germany lost a great statesman, Europe a dedicated European, and Croatia a great friend. Germany’s unification and the new European order after the fall of the Iron Curtain and the collapse of a bloc-divided world would be unthinkable without Helmut Kohl. He is one of the greatest political figures of our time. A visionary and a creator of Europe who made the right decisions at the right time – for Germany and Europe. Through his commitment during the 1990’s Croatia returned to the European family. He will always have a special place in our memory,” reads Pejčinović Burić’s message.

Helmut Kohl was a four-term federal chancellor from 1982 to 1998, precisely during the time of deep and dramatic changes in Europe. His exceptional contribution is that Germany was unified despite a heavy political resistance. No less important is his advancement of the historic project of a united Europe, which he developed in close cooperation with statesmen from both big and small countries. But certainly immeasurable is his role in creating conditions for the international recognition of Croatia’s independence. With Helmut Kohl’s death Croatia lost a great friend, whose support during the crucial moments will not be forgotten. Croatia will remember the great German and European politician with the utmost respect and a lasting gratitude.
