The International Women’s Day is officially observed by the UN member states since 1975. In more than a hundred years of fighting for the women’s right to vote, equality has been achieved in numerous aspects of life, but there is still a lot to be done in that field.

Women’s equality is an important global issue, both from the aspect of human rights and from the aspect of peace, security and sustainable development. Activities aimed at achieving gender equality and high on the list of Croatia’s foreign policy priorities.

Through targeted political and diplomatic activities, as well as through cooperation within the UN, EU, NATO, OSCE, CoE and other competent international and regional organizations and initiatives, and also bilaterally, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs is actively contributing to the fight against gender discrimination, protection of fundamental human rights, as well as economic and political empowerment of women, notably in post-conflict and transition societies.

Women make up 51% of population in Croatia, and their energy, strength and creativity are vital for society’s overall progress. That is why we believe true gender equality can contribute significantly to prosperity.

Our future activities will therefore be directed at preserving the rights of and protecting women, as well as their continued empowerment.

Happy International Women’s Day!
