FM Pejčinović Burić attends Women Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Montreal

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Marija Pejčinović Burić 21 and 22 September 2018 attended the Women Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Montreal. The meeting was organised within Canada’s G7 presidency and was dedicated to gender equality and empowerment of women as a key factor in building peace, eradicating poverty and ensuring economic growth.

During the discussions on gender equality and empowerment of women in Syria, Libya, Ukraine, Nicaragua and the suffering of Rohingya in Myanmar, Pejčinović Burić delivered a speech on strengthening democracy and resilience in peaceful and inclusive societies. She also highlighted the role of women and their representation at all levels in Croatia. The minister also talked about the role of women during the Homeland War and the peaceful reintegration of Croatia’s Podunavlje.

“The women in Croatia had an active and important role in the defence of our country and contributed to the building of lasting peace and a progressive society," Pejčinović Burić said. She underscored that women are represented in all services, from police and army to research-and-development and entrepreneurship.  As for pace missions, Pejčinović Burić pointed out the fact that over 330 Croatian women had to date participated in international peace missions worldwide, including the ongoing mission in Afghanistan.

Pejčinović Burić participated in paned on empowerment of women, political participation and leadership, advancement of global peace, security and progress, and fighting all forms of gender-based violence in conflict and post-conflict societies.

On the second day, the ministers met with representatives of civil society organizations and attended the opening of a photography exhibition themed “We Are Not Afraid” on women victims of violence in armed conflicts.

After the meeting, the ministers commemorated the victims of the École Polytechnique massacre.

During her stay in Montreal, Pejčinović Burić also met with representatives of the local Croatian expat community.
