Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Marija Pejčinović Burić 5 and 6 December attended a meeting of the foreign ministers of NATO member states.

During the two-day meeting, the participants discussed the political and security issues currently in the alliance’s focus.

These primarily include strengthening the NATO-EU cooperation, global security challenges, NATO’s cooperation with Georgia, projecting stability, terrorism and the Open Door Policy.

The session on strengthening the NATO-EU cooperation was also attended by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, as well as by foreign ministers of Finland and Sweden. The participants reviewed the progress in implementing Draft Measures for the Implementation of the NATO-EU Declaration from the 2016 Warsaw Summit and approved a new set of measures.

Also held was a NATO-Georgia meeting at which it was announced the alliance would step up cooperation with the former Soviet republic and considered the prospects of continued cooperation in its Euro-Atlantic integration.

A session on projecting stability, as the alliance’s key mechanism for strengthening security and stability in the neighbourhood, focused on fighting terrorism and NATO’s past and future contribution to it.

The meeting wrapped up with a session on the status of NATO’s Open Door Policy, at which Pejčinović Burić once again underlined the importance of continuing the alliance’s enlargement, apostrophizing Bosnia and Herzegovina and Macedonia in that context.
