FM Pejčinović Burić attends 54th Munich Security Conference

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Marija Pejčinović Burić 16 and 17 February 2018 attended the 54th Munich Security Conference.

This year, the conference focused on the question of what the international community can do to keep the existing regional and international conflicts from escalating beyond the point of return in times when nationalism is on the rise worldwide and core principles of international order are being brought into question.

Some of the central topics included the EU as a global actor as well as its relations with Russia and the US, strengthening of defence cooperation between the EU and NATO, and the future of transatlantic relations. The participants also reviewed the current status and prospects of international agreements on arms controls as well as security challenges from North Korea over the Middle East and the Persian Gulf to Sub-Saharan Africa.

Pejčinović Burić participated in the panel discussions on “Defence Cooperation in the EU and NATO: More European, More Connected, More Capable?” and the future of Europe, which saw addresses by German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel, British Prime Minister Theresa May, European Commission’s President Jean Claude Juncker at al.

On the sidelines of the conference, Pejčinović Burić held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, US Deputy Secretary of Energy Dan Brouillette and Political Director at the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs Alon Ushpiz. She also met briefly with German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel, UN General Assembly President Miroslav Lajčak, Chief EU Negotiator for Brexit Michel Barnier, Holy See Secretary for Relations with States Paul Richard Gallagher, Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano, and Bavarian Minister of European Affairs and International Relations Beate Merk.
