Foreign Minister Gordan Grlić Radman attended an extraordinary session of the EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC), convened due to deteriorating security situation in the Middle East and North Africa.
The ministers discussed the recent developments in Iraq with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and the situation in Libya with UN Special Representative and UNSMIL Head Ghassan Salamé.
The crisis in Iraq is jeopardizing long-standing international efforts to stabilize the country, including the actions by the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS.
The ministers called for the defusing of situation and underscored strong support for Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as commitment to continued joint efforts to stabilize the country.
They also expressed unequivocal support for JCPOA and called for its respect.
The Council voiced concern over the worsening security situation in Libya. The ministers called on all actors to establish dialogue and underlined support for the continuation of the Berlin Process as well as the engagement of the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell. They also discussed ways for the EU to contribute to finding a political solution to the Libyan crisis.
