Donetsk and Lugansk elections illegitimate

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs expresses concern over the so-called election held 2 November in parts of Ukraine’s Donetsk and Lugansk oblast

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs expresses its concern over the holding of elections in some parts of the Donestk and Luhansk regions of the Ukraine on 2 November 2014.

We hold that these so-called elections, conducted by the separatist authorities, are in direct contradiction to the signed Protocol from Minsk on 5 September 2014, the Ukrainian Constitution and laws, as well as, the Law on Interim Local Self-Government in Certain Districts of the Donestk and Luhansk Regions adopted on 16 September 2014. For this reason we cannot consider these elections as legitimate.

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs calls on all parties, with the aim of normalizing the situation as soon as possible, to respect signed agreements as well as the independence and territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Ukraine.
