Deputy Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Joško Klisović attended the 123rd session of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers, held 16 May in Strasbourg.

The theme of the session was “Democracy, Human Rights, and the Rule of Law in Europe: Strengthening the Impact of the Council of Europe’s Activities”. Klisović underlined the importance of the oldest pan-European organization in uniting Europe based on common values and principles. Noting some of the pressing challenges in modern-day Europe such as the economic crisis and savings measures, declining confidence in public institutions as well as a rise in intolerance, discrimination and extremism, he said that the Council of Europe’s task was to rise to these challenges through a stronger engagement in promoting democracy, human rights and the rule of law, so that all the European citizens could enjoy the same standards, including citizens of the countries that are not yet CoE members, such as Kosovo and Belarus.

Klisović stressed in particular the role of the European Court of Human Rights and underscored Croatia’s strong support for recognizing the integrity of the Salzburg system of human rights protection. He also expressed support for the EU accession to the Convention of Human Rights, which will round off the European legal space.

On the fringes of the session, Deputy Minister Klisović held talks with State Secretary from the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Vera Mavrić, Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Arif Mammadov and Permanent Secretary from the Cyprian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Andreas Mavroyiannis. The talks focused on bilateral relations and CoE activities.
